Major: Undeclared

Hometown: Islamabad

I grew up in Islamabad thinking I would be an architect. That’s because when I was about eight years old, whenever my family and I would take a trip I would draw the buildings we would visit.

I’m over that now. No drawings in a long time. Still, the architecture interest did influence my selection of a college. I wanted to live and learn at a beautiful place and I certainly found that at Rhodes! I always knew that I would come to the US as both my older brother and sister did. She is working on a Ph.D. in Florida now and he is a financial analyst in London. How could I not be ambitious??

I plan to major in economics and international studies. Some people are surprised that, as a first-year student, I already know my major. That’s not all—I know what I want to do with that major. My dream is to advise the government (not sure which one yet) on economic policy.

No, I am not all business. Whenever I have a few minutes to spare you’ll find me out on campus somewhere kicking a soccer ball. Yes, soccer is my big love. I played for my high school team and, when I’m more settled, I hope to play for the Lynx. Meanwhile I’m happy with pickup games.

I’m also serious about my religion. As secretary of the Muslim Students Association I enjoy playing a role in helping the rest of the Rhodes community understand Islam. We try to find fun and interesting ways to do that such as sponsoring a screening of the film Allah Made Me Funny.

It will be fun, too, I think, to share my experiences as an international student at Rhodes. If you’re reading this I hope that means you’re interested. Feel free to leave me comments and ask me questions.
