MIFA Handiman Build Day – November 14th (jeaeb@rhodes.edu)

MIFA Handyman Program-We will be having a service day on November 14th. MIFA handyman program is a lot like Habitat-For-Humanity. MIFA handiman program believes that low-income senior homeowners deserve to live in warmth, safety, and independence. We will make a build team to provide needed minor home improvements to allow these senior to continue to live in their own homes. Thanksgiving Break Housing

During the Thanksgiving Break, all residence halls are closed except Townsend, Trezevant, Voorhies, East Village and Williford. If you will need housing accommodations for any or all of Thanksgiving Break, you are responsible for arranging to stay temporarily in the rooms of acquaintances residing in the halls designated to be open.

Non-break housing halls will officially close Wednesday, November 25 at 10:00 a.m., and fob access will be deactivated. Halls will reopen Sunday, November 29 at 8:00 a.m.

ODK Angel Tree Begins Today November 5th!

ODK ANGEL TREE BEGINS

“Adopt” a child or senior citizen starting Nov. 5 and return gifts by Nov. 30.

The Rhodes circle of Omicron Delta Kappa, the national honor society, will hold its annual “Angel Tree” in the Burrow Refectory lobby starting Thursday, November 5. The tree will contain the names of needy children and senior citizens who have been identified by the Salvation Army.

Students, faculty and staff can sponsor an “Angel” by purchasing and returning gifts (unwrapped) in the sack provided to Hyde Hall of the Refectory, by 5:00 p.m. Monday, November 30.

ODK Vice President Jackie Hancock ’10 is coordinator of the Angel Tree program. Other ODK officers are seniors Betsy Parkinson (President), Carrie Tennant (Secretary) and Hannah Spirrison (Elections).

Gingerbread House building Competion November 18th!

Habitat For Humanity will be having a gingerbread house building competition on November 18th from 6-8pm in the Lair. Please come out and show your support for Habitat For Humanity by building a gingerbread house and having some fun!! There will be a $5 entry fee with all proceeds going to habitat for humanity and there is a limit of 5 people per house. We will provide the gingerbread, icing, and candy for decorating but feel free to bring your own candy to decorate also. There will be great prizes for the top winners and we will have sign-ups in the rat and lair the week before this event. Look out for more information about this event around campus as we will have more information about prizes as the time gets closer.

Concerned about International Justice?

A chapter of IJM-International Justice Mission is being started at Rhodes and we need participants!

IJM is an NGO (non-governmental organization) that works against sextrafficking, slavery, genocide, and many other violent crimes against men women and children.

November 7^th – Packaging event for stop hunger now (9-12pm or 1-4pm)

On Saturday November 7^th, Stop Hunger Now is having one of the nation’s largest food=packaging events in Cheney Parish Hall. Shifts are available from 9-12pm or 1-4pm. We will be packaging highly nutritious meals for dire situations, school feeding programs and orphanages in underdeveloped countries around the world, such as Haiti. Nebraska Conference for Undergraduate Women in Mathematics

The Twelfth annual Nebraska Conference for Undergraduate Women in Mathematics will be January 29 -January 31, 2010. This conference is a great way to meet other women with similar interests and share research experiences. You can present at the conference or just go to see the presentations and attend the panel discussions. The panel discussions will be the following: Careers Using Mathematics and Choosing a Mathematics Graduate Program.

The conference covers lodging expenses and most meals while you are at the conference. Travel expenses will be paid in part by Rhodes. We will not know how much travel expenses per person will be until we know how many people are going, but most of the cost should be covered by Rhodes and/or the conference. Registration deadline is December 4, 2009 but there are a limited number of spaces so the earlier you can register, the better. I am asking that you please email me, Catherine Appleton, at appcj by Friday Nov. 14th if you plan to attend so that we can know how many people we need to cover for travel expenses. Rhodes will also be paying for the registration fee which is $30 which you will see when you go to the website to register.

Again, please contact Catherine Appleton at appcj@rhodes.edu if you plan to attend this conference. If you do not contact me then Rhodes will not be able to pay for your registration fee or help with travel expenses. CODA $5 TICKETS

THIS WEEK

CODA $5 Tickets are tickets to events around town that CODA at Rhodes purchases and sells to students, faculty and staff for $5- a savings of up to $70 versus individual ticket prices. Tickets for each event will go on sale on the date indicated below that event. They are always available to students for several days before they are available to faculty and staff. Tickets are $5 each (cash preferred, check accepted, no credit), are limit 4 per person per event, and can be purchased in Hassell Hall 111 from 8:30am-4pm daily until they are gone. You will need to provide your Rhodes ID when purchasing tickets and at the event.
