Valuable Memories

January 20th, 2009 by Allie · No Comments

Welcome back! The second semester has begun and with it once again comes the challenges of balancing academics and a social life. While free time decreases as the semester progresses being a Rhodes student offers a great deal of opportunities that many of us would not have encountered elsewhere. As a member of CHEERS (Coalition Helping Educate and Empower Rhodes Students) I was introduced to the BACCHUS network, a national nonprofit company that works to encourage leadership among peer educators. In November at the General Assembly held in Columbus, Ohio I became a representative for the student advisory committee, which includes twelve students from different regions of the country.
This past weekend I attended training for my new position as a student advisory committee member representative in Denver, Colorado. My weekend and the experiences I had were extremely memorable. Not only did I have a wonderful time exploring the city of Denver, walking around the beautifully lit up streets, visiting the aquarium, and having dinner at the Hard Rock Café, followed by a little shopping, I met thirteen people who shared similar goals, passions, and outlooks. In the course of 2 ½ days we connected through our desire to educate students about safe and healthy behaviors. After this weekend I am even more excited about my duties as a SAC representative and I am already looking forward to July when we will all come together once again in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Even though Rhodes is a smaller institution it has so many opportunities to offer its students. Make sure to take advantage of all the resources available to you during your four years, whether it is through studying abroad, volunteering, or being part of an organization because all will provide valuable memories.
